Flip it!

By now you must know that my foray into motherhood has been rather...clumsy (for the lack of a better word). Imagine Bridget Jones becoming a mother..trying to figure out how to make the baby wear a diaper...squeamish and funny!
When my baby was born, we stuck to the langot ( Indian cloth nappy with tie ups) for three months or so. I didn't plan to start him on diapers, unless we were out or had guests over..basically only when i would find it difficult to change him because carrying a potty soaked cloth in my handbag is just not my style.
Do you guys know that babies grow out of the cloth nappies? who knew? Ok..fine.. maybe it was just me but it happened that one day i was tying his nappy and it felt snug. my first reaction, oh the nappy shrunk! it was only when after five changes and since all nappies seemed too cozy for his weenie that it finally occurred to me that he had grown out of it! i didn't give up then.. i ordered for new ones.. only to realize that i was already using the largest size! Honestly, i was using a nappy liner with it so it needed some more space. My baby is not of epic proportions. just to be clear.
so i decided to take the only route known to me then..pamper ahoy! suddenly there was more free time! so convenient..bliss....
now this thing about visitors.. they have to HAVE an opinion.too much pampers is not good for the baby.. they potty train later.. susceptible to rashes.. ( i know you are nodding in approval) but the antenna- shooting- OMG- what did i do - worthy comment was : too much diaper reduces the male sperm count!! have i just vanquished the future Kudalkar generation, for just a little free time? My grand children s life is at stake here!!! What have i done?? GUILT TRIP ALERT!
Inconclusive googling on that part did stumble me on to the cloth diapering revolution that has hit the smarter lot of parents. the thing is, i didn't want to go back to nappy because it was inconvenient and disposable diapers are, apart from all the above - BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT ( new learning for the new mom :)) Yup, its true, they go in as landfill waste. non biodegradable and non recyclable..Huggies does say on their website that the diapers are biogradable 'over a period of time'. whatever that means... but i suddenly was reminded of that first scene from the movie
Wall -E.....THAT is what will happen 'Over a period of time'..don't want to be responsible for that..no..no.. 'so what did mommy leave behind for baby? - a world full of trash'....nopes, not this mommy!
So back to cloth diapering ( think i am the last mother on the planet to have discovered this) but nevertheless, i did! so basically, i wanted a cloth with the ease of disposable and discovered FLIP! this is a system of a cloth insert and a cover. The diaper cover is made of ..umm...lets call it, non cotton breatheable material with a waxy coating to repel wetness. in this cover you insert the cloth. you have the option of  orgainc cotton insert or the microfiber one. i bought both. love the organic cotton inserts to the microfiber because i feel they are better in the hot and humid climate i live in. i use the microfibre ones for the night. both last upto 3-4 hrs and hold the pee and poop in. they dont leak..thanks to the cover. the other difference is that cotton ones do get wet..so the baby feels the wetness over time - which is a positive for me because it will help him potty train quicker. the microfiber has a fleece lining which keeps the nappy dry.. which is good for the night so that he does not wake up due to the discomfort. The other difference is that the cotton one is a lot bulkier than the microfiber one. so if you make your baby wear pjs over it, his behind will look like Kim Kardashian's..only a little square.:/
The cover can be changed after three insert changes or after poop so you don't have a truck load of laundry! the only drawback for me is that my baby gets a little redness due to the elastic..you know like how we do with the bra strap. But you must know that we both have sensitive skin and even the disposable ones caused these lines where they pressed against the skin. the way i overcome this is by letting him go commando between diaper changes. especially after he has pooped.
This has been such a boon for me..it was just like an answered prayer!! Now i am not one bit worried about my grandchildren not making it :)so excited was i about all this that  i gushed about my success with cloth diapering to my hubby and he said,'didn't you know, boys don't produce sperms till puberty!' What the...???!!You don't say!!!!
Anyway, much good came out of it and i got so hooked on that i have ordered the award winning Bumgenius 4.0, charlie banana and some bumgenius elementals.. will give you my take on it after some serious r&d.
You can order cloth diapers from leading baby websites like firstcry, babyoye, smartbaby.in (official distributors for Flip & Bumgenius but they charge for shipping..bummer)..maybe i should do my next post on these websites..I am thinking..hmmm...
